Henry Hazlitt was an American economist, journalist, and philosopher. He was a leading advocate of classical liberalism and free markets, and his writings have had a profound impact on the development of economic thought.

Early Life and Career

Hazlitt was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1894. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1915 and began his career as a journalist. He worked for several newspapers and magazines, including the New York Evening Post, the Wall Street Journal, and Newsweek. In 1946, he joined the Foundation for Economic Education, where he served as vice president and editor of its magazine, The Freeman.

Economic Philosophy

Hazlitt was a strong advocate of classical liberalism and free markets. He believed that the free market is the most efficient way to allocate resources and that government intervention in the economy is generally harmful. He was particularly critical of Keynesian economics, which he argued was based on faulty assumptions and led to inflation and economic instability.

Hazlitt's economic philosophy was heavily influenced by the Austrian School of economics, particularly the work of Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek. He was also a strong supporter of the gold standard and opposed the creation of fiat currency.

Major Works

Hazlitt wrote over 20 books and hundreds of articles on economics, politics, and philosophy. His most famous work is Economics in One Lesson, which has been translated into over 20 languages and has sold over 2 million copies.

Other notable works by Hazlitt include:

  • The Failure of the "New Economics"
  • The Great Depression: An Austrian Perspective
  • The Conquest of Poverty
  • A New Constitution Now
  • The Wisdom of Henry Hazlitt

Legacy

Henry Hazlitt was one of the most influential economists of the 20th century. His writings helped to revive classical liberalism and free market economics after the Great Depression. He was also a strong advocate for individual liberty and limited government.

Hazlitt's legacy continues today through the work of the Foundation for Economic Education and other organizations that promote his ideas. His writings are still widely read and studied by economists, policymakers, and anyone who wants to understand the principles of a free and prosperous society.
