After graduating from high school, Walton attended the University of Missouri. He studied business and economics. After graduating from college, Walton worked as a sales trainee for J.C. Penney. He quickly rose through the ranks and became a store manager.
Founding Walmart
In 1962, Walton opened his first Walmart store in Rogers, Arkansas. The store was a success from the start. Walton's philosophy was to offer low prices and excellent customer service. He also believed in giving his employees a stake in the company. This helped to create a loyal and motivated workforce.
Walmart quickly grew into a regional chain. In 1972, Walton took the company public. This gave Walmart the capital it needed to expand nationally. By the early 1980s, Walmart was the largest retailer in the United States.
