Born in 1812 in the coastal town of Newcastle, Maine, Nickels grew up with a passion for the sea. By the age of 16, he had already made his first voyage to Europe as a cabin boy.
Adventurous Voyages and Maritime Innovations
Nickels spent the next several years sailing around the world, visiting distant lands and witnessing firsthand the challenges faced by mariners.
Inspired by his experiences, Nickels began to develop innovative solutions to improve maritime safety and efficiency. He invented a new type of ship's compass that was more accurate and reliable than existing models, as well as a system of lifeboats that could be launched even in rough seas.
These inventions earned Nickels a reputation as a visionary leader in the shipping industry. In 1840, he founded the Knickerbocker Steamship Company, which operated a fleet of steamships that transported passengers and goods between New York City and the West Indies.
Engineering and Civil Works

He designed and constructed the New York and Albany Railroad, which was one of the first railroads in the United States. He also built several bridges, including the Piscataqua River Bridge, which was the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time of its completion.
Nickels' engineering prowess extended beyond transportation. He also designed and built the Rockland Waterworks, which provided a reliable water supply to the city of Rockland, Maine.
Philanthropy and Legacy
Throughout his life, Nickels was committed to giving back to his community. He donated generously to educational and charitable causes, and he established a scholarship fund to help underprivileged students pursue their dreams.
Nickels died in 1883, leaving behind a legacy of adventure, leadership, and innovation. He is remembered as a pioneering figure who helped to shape the course of the 19th century.
