Early Life and Career
Fleming was born in London in 1907. He was the son of Valentine Fleming, a barrister, and Eveleen St. Croix Fleming, a writer. Fleming was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. After graduating from Oxford, Fleming worked as a journalist for The Times. In 1932, he published his first book, Brazilian Adventure, an account of his travels in Brazil.
World War II
When World War II broke out in 1939, Fleming joined the British Army. He was assigned to the Intelligence Corps and served in Norway, Greece, and Yugoslavia. In Yugoslavia, Fleming worked with the partisans, a group of anti-Nazi guerrillas. He helped to organize and train the partisans and led them on several successful raids against the German occupiers.
In 1944, Fleming participated in Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy. He landed on Sword Beach on D-Day and fought his way inland. Fleming was wounded in action but continued to fight until the end of the war.
Post-War Career
After the war, Fleming returned to journalism. He wrote several books about his wartime experiences, including The Dragon's Teeth (1942),Operation Sea Lion (1952),and The Sixth Column (1952). Fleming also wrote travel books and biographies. He died in London in 1971.
