Early Life and Education

Golda Mabovitch was born on May 3, 1898, in Kiev, Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire. Her family was poor, and she had a difficult childhood. She immigrated to the United States with her family in 1906, and they settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Meir attended school and worked in a factory to help support her family.

In 1919, Meir moved to Palestine, which was then under British rule. She became involved in the Zionist movement, which sought to establish a Jewish state in Palestine. Meir worked for the Jewish Agency, which was responsible for promoting Jewish immigration to Palestine and developing the economy.

Political Career

Meir entered politics in 1948, when she was elected to the Knesset, Israel's parliament. She served in various ministerial positions, including Minister of Labor and Minister of Foreign Affairs. In 1969, Meir became Israel's fourth prime minister, succeeding Levi Eshkol.

As prime minister, Meir faced many challenges, including the Six-Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973. She also played a key role in the peace negotiations that followed the Six-Day War. Meir retired from politics in 1974.

Legacy

Golda Meir was a trailblazing leader who played a pivotal role in shaping Israel's destiny. She was the first woman to serve as prime minister of Israel, and she was a strong advocate for peace. Meir's legacy continues to inspire countless people worldwide.
