At the age of 14, Evelyn moved to New York City with her aunt. She quickly found work as a model, and her striking beauty soon made her one of the most sought-after models in the city.
In 1901, Evelyn met Harry K. Thaw, a wealthy Pittsburgh steel heir. Thaw was infatuated with Evelyn, and he soon began pursuing her relentlessly. Evelyn was initially hesitant, but she eventually gave in to his advances.
Thaw and Evelyn were married in 1905. The marriage was a disaster from the start. Thaw was possessive and jealous, and he often flew into rages. Evelyn, for her part, was unhappy and unfulfilled.
In 1906, Thaw's jealousy reached a boiling point. He became convinced that Evelyn was having an affair with Stanford White, a prominent architect. On June 25, 1906, Thaw shot and killed White in front of a crowd of witnesses.
Thaw was arrested and charged with murder. The trial was a sensation, and Evelyn was forced to testify against her husband. Thaw was eventually found not guilty by reason of insanity.
After the trial, Evelyn's life spiraled out of control. She divorced Thaw and married a series of other men, but none of her marriages were successful. She also struggled with drug addiction and mental illness.
Evelyn Nesbit died in 1967 at the age of 82. She was a tragic figure, a woman who was both celebrated and vilified in her lifetime. Her story is a cautionary tale about the dangers of beauty and the price of fame.
