Neall Ellis was born in South Africa in 1944. He grew up on a farm and developed a love of flying at a young age. After completing his national service, Ellis joined the Rhodesian Air Force. After the Vietnam War, Ellis returned to Rhodesia and continued to fly gunships. He also worked as a mercenary in various African conflicts. In 1980, Ellis moved to South Africa, where he continued to work as a mercenary. He fought in the Angolan Civil War and the South African Border War. In 1994, Ellis retired from mercenary work and settled down in South Africa.
