Early Life and Education

Biko was born in King William's Town, South Africa, in 1946. He was the son of a Methodist minister and a schoolteacher. Biko attended Lovedale High School, where he excelled in his studies. He went on to study medicine at the University of Natal, where he became involved in anti-apartheid activism.

Black Consciousness Movement

In the late 1960s, Biko helped to found the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM). The BCM was a black nationalist movement that sought to promote black pride and self-reliance. Biko believed that black people needed to liberate themselves from the psychological and economic oppression of apartheid.

The BCM organized protests and boycotts against the apartheid government. Biko was arrested several times for his activism. In 1973, he was banned from speaking or writing anything that could be interpreted as political.

Arrest and Death

In 1977, Biko was arrested and charged with terrorism. He was tortured and beaten in prison. On September 12, 1977, he died of his injuries. Biko's death sparked outrage around the world.

Legacy

Biko's legacy is one of courage and resilience. He was a fearless fighter against apartheid and his writings and speeches continue to inspire activists around the world. Biko's life and work are a reminder that we must never give up the fight for justice and equality.
