Early Life and Education
Stephen McDannell Hillenburg was born on August 21, 1961, in Lawton, Oklahoma. From a young age, he displayed a keen interest in art and marine biology. After graduating from high school, Hillenburg attended Humboldt State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marine biology. He then went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree in experimental animation from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).
Career in Animation
After graduating from CalArts, Hillenburg began his career in animation as a director on the popular Nickelodeon animated series The Ren & Stimpy Show. He quickly rose through the ranks, and in 1998, he created his own animated series, SpongeBob SquarePants. The show, which follows the misadventures of a cheerful, optimistic sponge who lives in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom, became a global phenomenon. It has been translated into more than 50 languages and has aired in over 200 countries.
SpongeBob SquarePants has won numerous awards, including four Emmy Awards and two Academy Awards. It has also spawned two feature films, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004) and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015). A third film, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, is scheduled to be released in 2021.
Personal Life and Legacy
Stephen Hillenburg was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2017. He passed away on November 26, 2018, at the age of 57. Despite his illness, Hillenburg continued to work on SpongeBob SquarePants until his death. He was a passionate advocate for marine conservation, and he often incorporated environmental messages into his work. Hillenburg's legacy will live on through his beloved characters and his commitment to making a positive impact on the world.
