Involvement in the Abolitionist Movement

In Boston, Walker joined the abolitionist movement and became an active member of the Anti-Slavery Society. He used his skills as a carpenter to build coffins for escaped slaves who had died on their journey to freedom.

Walker's most famous act of defiance came in 1844 when he rescued a runaway slave named Shadrach Minkins from a Boston courthouse. Minkins had been arrested and was being held for return to slavery under the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.

The Rescue of Shadrach Minkins

On February 15, 1844, Walker led a group of African American men into the courthouse and overpowered the guards. They then helped Minkins escape to a safe house and eventually to Canada.

Walker's actions sent shockwaves throughout the country and became a major turning point in the abolitionist movement. It also led to his own arrest and imprisonment, but he refused to back down from his beliefs.
