Seymour Hersh, A Pulitzer Prize Winning Investigative Journalist, In A Pensive Pose The Inconvenient Journalist: A Memoir

In his gripping memoir, The Inconvenient Journalist, Seymour Hersh, the Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist, recounts his extraordinary career, revealing the untold stories behind his most groundbreaking investigations and the personal toll they took on him.

From the My Lai massacre in Vietnam to the Watergate scandal, from the Valerie Plame affair to the Abu Ghraib torture scandal, Hersh has fearlessly exposed some of the most closely guarded secrets of our time. His work has earned him both accolades and enemies, and he has been vilified by those in power for his relentless pursuit of the truth.

But Hersh has never shied away from controversy. He believes that it is the duty of journalists to hold the powerful to account, even when it means making them uncomfortable.

"I'm not interested in being popular," Hersh says. "I'm interested in getting at the truth."

My Lai Massacre

One of Hersh's most famous investigations was his expose of the My Lai massacre, in which American soldiers killed hundreds of unarmed Vietnamese civilians in 1968.

Hersh's reporting on My Lai was based on interviews with soldiers who had participated in the massacre, and his findings were published in a series of articles in The Dispatch News Service.

Hersh's reporting on My Lai was met with disbelief and outrage, and he was accused of fabricating the story. But Hersh stood by his reporting, and his findings were eventually confirmed by the U.S. Army.

The My Lai massacre was a watershed moment in the Vietnam War, and it helped to turn public opinion against the war. Hersh's reporting on My Lai also earned him a Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting.

Watergate

Hersh's reporting on the Watergate scandal was another major turning point in his career.

In 1972, Hersh was working for The New York Times when he received a tip from a source inside the Nixon White House. The source told Hersh that the White House was involved in the break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Hotel.

Hersh's reporting on Watergate helped to unravel the scandal, and it led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon.

Hersh's work on Watergate earned him another Pulitzer Prize, and it cemented his reputation as one of the most respected investigative journalists in the world.

Valerie Plame Affair

In 2003, Hersh published an article in The New Yorker magazine that revealed the identity of Valerie Plame, a CIA agent whose cover was blown by the Bush administration.

Hersh's reporting on the Valerie Plame affair led to the conviction of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney.

The Valerie Plame affair was a major scandal, and it damaged the reputation of the Bush administration. Hersh's reporting on the affair also earned him a third Pulitzer Prize.

Abu Ghraib Torture Scandal

In 2004, Hersh published an article in The New Yorker magazine that revealed the systematic torture of Iraqi prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

Hersh's reporting on Abu Ghraib was based on interviews with soldiers who had witnessed the torture, and his findings were published in a series of articles in The New Yorker magazine.

Hersh's reporting on Abu Ghraib was met with outrage, and it led to a congressional investigation. Hersh's reporting also earned him a fourth Pulitzer Prize.

WikiLeaks and Edward Snowden

In recent years, Hersh has continued to investigate and report on some of the most important stories of our time.

In 2010, Hersh published an article in The New Yorker magazine that revealed the U.S. military's use of drones to kill suspected terrorists in Pakistan.

In 2013, Hersh published an article in The London Review of Books that revealed the U.S. National Security Agency's mass surveillance program.

Hersh's reporting on WikiLeaks and Edward Snowden has earned him praise from many, but it has also made him a target of the U.S. government.

In 2014, Hersh was subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury about his contacts with Snowden. Hersh refused to testify, and he was charged with contempt of court.

Hersh's case is still pending, but he has vowed to continue to fight for the First Amendment right of journalists to protect their sources.

Seymour Hersh is one of the most important journalists of our time. His work has helped to expose some of the most closely guarded secrets of our time, and he has held the powerful to
