That Went By Fast: My First Hundred Years
I was born in the year 1922, the same year that the first commercial radio station began broadcasting. I have lived through a century of incredible change, from the advent of the automobile to the rise of the internet. I have witnessed the horrors of war and the triumphs of peace. I have seen humanity at its best and at its worst.
My parents were farmers, and I grew up on a small farm in rural Iowa. Life was simple in those days. We worked hard, but we also had a lot of fun. I remember playing baseball with my friends in the summer and sledding down the hills in the winter. I also loved to read, and I spent many hours lost in the pages of books.

I graduated from high school in 1940, and then I went to college at the University of Iowa. I studied journalism, and I worked on the college newspaper. After I graduated from college, I got a job as a reporter for a small-town newspaper. I loved my job, and I quickly rose through the ranks. Within a few years, I was the editor of the newspaper.
In 1948, I married my wife, Mary. We had two children, a son and a daughter. We lived in a small house in the suburbs, and we were very happy. I continued to work as a journalist, and I eventually became the editor of a large metropolitan newspaper.
I retired from journalism in 1982, but I didn't slow down. I volunteered for many different organizations, and I also wrote several books. I also traveled extensively, and I visited all seven continents. I have had a long and full life, and I am grateful for all the experiences I have had.
