Stella Adler was born in New York City on February 10, 1902. Her parents were Russian Jewish immigrants who had come to the United States in search of a better life. Adler's father was a doctor and her mother was a homemaker. Adler had two older brothers, Luther and Jay. Adler's family was very supportive of her artistic ambitions. She began taking acting lessons at the age of 12 and made her Broadway debut at the age of 17.
