Early Life and Education
Rachel Maddow was born on April 1, 1973, in Castro Valley, California. Her father, Robert B. Maddow, was a United States Air Force captain who flew B-52 bombers during the Vietnam War. Her mother, Elaine Gosse Maddow, was a school administrator. Maddow has a younger sister named Heather.
Maddow grew up in a Roman Catholic household and attended Sacred Heart School in her hometown. She graduated from Castro Valley High School in 1991. Maddow then attended Stanford University, where she studied political science and graduated with honors in 1995.

Radio Career
After graduating from Stanford, Maddow worked as a researcher for the AIDS Action Council in Washington, D.C. She then moved to Massachusetts to pursue a career in radio journalism. In 1999, she joined WRSI, a public radio station in Northampton, Massachusetts, as a weekend host.
In 2000, Maddow became the host of "The Rachel Maddow Show" on WRNX, a commercial radio station in Springfield, Massachusetts. The show was a local talk show that covered politics, culture, and current events. Maddow's sharp wit and incisive commentary quickly gained her a following.
In 2004, Maddow's show was picked up by Air America Radio, a national progressive talk radio network. The show became a hit on Air America, and Maddow quickly became one of the most popular hosts on the network.
Television Career
In 2008, Maddow joined MSNBC as a host and commentator. She hosted several shows on the network, including "The Rachel Maddow Show," "Countdown with Keith Olbermann," and "Melissa Harris-Perry."
In 2011, Maddow's show was moved to the 9 p.m. time slot, making her the first openly gay person to host a prime-time news show on a major American television network.

Personal Life
Maddow is married to Lisa Rogak, a photographer and artist. The couple met in 1999 and have been together ever since. Rogak is a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute. She has exhibited her work in galleries and museums around the world.
Maddow and Rogak live in New York City. They are both active in progressive politics.
