Early Life and Career
Andy Rooney was born on January 14, 1919, in Albany, New York. After graduating from Colgate University in 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces. Rooney served as a radio operator and gunner on a B-24 Liberator bomber, flying multiple missions over Nazi-occupied Europe. During one mission, his plane was shot down over France, and Rooney spent several months as a prisoner of war before being liberated by Allied forces.
After the war, Rooney began his journalism career as a writer for Stars and Stripes, the official newspaper of the U.S. armed forces. In 1949, he joined CBS News, where he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a producer and reporter for the network's flagship news program, See It Now.
Wartime Experiences
In 1944, Rooney was assigned to cover the Allied invasion of Normandy. He landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and witnessed the horrors of the battle firsthand. Rooney's vivid descriptions of the carnage and bravery he saw on that fateful day remain among the most powerful accounts of the Normandy landings.
Rooney also covered the Battle of the Bulge, the last major Nazi offensive of the war. He was embedded with the U.S. 101st Airborne Division during the siege of Bastogne and reported on the desperate fighting that took place in the Ardennes Forest. Rooney's dispatches from the front lines provided Americans with a chilling reminder of the brutality and sacrifices of war.
In addition to his reporting from Europe, Rooney also covered the Pacific War, where he witnessed the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Rooney's experiences during the war had a profound impact on his life and shaped his views on journalism, war, and the human condition.
My War: A Memoir
In 1995, Rooney published his memoir, My War. The book is a powerful and poignant account of his experiences as a war correspondent during World War II. Rooney writes with honesty, humor, and a deep sense of human empathy. My War is not only a personal memoir but also a valuable historical document, providing a firsthand account of one of the most significant conflicts in human history.
Rooney's memoir has been praised by critics and readers alike for its vivid storytelling, insightful observations, and timeless relevance. In a review for The New York Times, critic Christopher Lehmann wrote, "My War is a compelling and thought-provoking memoir that offers a unique perspective on World War II from the front lines. Rooney's writing is clear, concise, and often lyrical, and his insights into human nature are both profound and moving."

Andy Rooney was one of the most respected and influential journalists of the 20th century. His wartime experiences gave him a unique understanding of the human cost of war, and he used his platform as a journalist to speak out against violence and injustice. Rooney's memoir, My War, is a lasting testament to his courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment to truth.
