The Birth of Tree Woman

Born in 1974, Julia grew up with a deep love for nature and a keen awareness of the threats it faced. At age 23, she witnessed the devastating impact of logging on the majestic redwood forests of her beloved home. Determined to make a difference, she joined the environmental group Earth First! and dedicated her life to protecting these ancient giants.

In 1997, Hill learned that Pacific Lumber Company (PALCO),a subsidiary of the timber giant Maxxam Inc., planned to log a 2,400-acre grove of old-growth redwoods known as the Headwaters Forest. Horrified, she resolved to take direct action.

Living in the Canopy

On December 10, 1997, Hill ascended a towering 1,900-year-old redwood tree known as Luna and refused to come down. She had no climbing experience and no clear plan, but her determination was unshakeable. She named herself "Tree Woman" and prepared herself for a long and perilous stay.

For the next 738 days, Hill lived in the canopy of Luna, enduring harsh weather, insects, and threats from loggers. She relied on supplies delivered by fellow activists and shared her story with the world through handwritten notes and a makeshift pulley system.

A Symbol of Resistance

Hill's courageous stand captured the attention of the media and the public. She became a symbol of resistance against the destruction of the ancient redwood forests. People across the country were inspired by her unwavering commitment and her willingness to put her life on the line for the environment.

The logging company and state authorities tried to intimidate Hill and force her to come down, but she remained steadfast. She faced criminal charges, threats of violence, and even an attempt to cut down the tree below her. Undeterred, she continued to broadcast her message of hope and the importance of protecting these irreplaceable natural treasures.

A Triumphant Victory

After nearly two years of living in the canopy, Hill's efforts paid off. In June 1999, PALCO agreed to sell the Headwaters Forest to a conservation group for $38 million. The deal preserved the grove from being logged and ensured its protection for future generations.

Hill's victory was a triumph not only for her but for the entire environmental movement. It demonstrated the power of one determined individual to make a lasting impact on the world. Her story inspired countless others to become involved in protecting the planet.

The Legacy of Tree Woman

Julia Butterfly Hill's legacy extends far beyond her 738-day stay in Luna. She became a renowned environmental activist and author, and her story has been told in books, documentaries, and speeches. She co-founded the nonprofit organization Circle of Life to continue her work of protecting forests and educating the public about their importance.

The Headwaters Forest, which Hill helped to save, is now a protected area and a testament to her unwavering determination. It serves as a reminder of the vital role that ancient forests play in maintaining biodiversity, regulating the climate, and enriching our lives.
