The Circumstances of Its Creation

Horatio Spafford, a successful American businessman, was a devout Christian who had invested heavily in real estate in Chicago. However, the Great Fire of 1871 devastated his holdings, leaving him bankrupt. Undeterred, he decided to take his family on a trip to Europe, hoping to rebuild his life there.

Tragedy struck again when their ship, the Ville du Havre, collided with another vessel in mid-Atlantic. While Spafford's wife and four daughters survived, his four young sons perished. Overwhelmed by grief, he wrote the first stanza of "It Is Well with My Soul" as he stood on the deck of the rescue ship that had picked them up.

The Lyrics and Their Significance

Despite the immense loss he had suffered, Spafford's faith remained unwavering. His hymn expresses a profound understanding of God's sovereignty and His ability to bring good out of even the most painful circumstances.

Verse 1:

When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my soul.

In this opening stanza, Spafford acknowledges that life is a tapestry of both joy and sorrow. However, regardless of the circumstances, he chooses to trust in God's unwavering love and care.

Verse 2:

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, Let this blest assurance control, That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate, And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

Temptations and challenges are inevitable, but Spafford finds comfort in the knowledge that Christ has already overcome them all. He trusts in the Savior's love and the power of His sacrifice.

Verse 3:

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole, Is nailed to the Cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

Spafford's hymn celebrates the transformative power of Christ's redemption. He recognizes that through faith, his sins have been forgiven, offering him a sense of freedom and joy.

Verse 4:

For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live, My hope and my portion secure; The three in One God is my Dwelling Place, And I dwell in His love evermore.
