One of the most harrowing experiences of the war was endured by the Israeli soldiers who were taken prisoner by the Egyptian army. These men were subjected to harsh treatment and endured unimaginable hardships while in captivity.

One such soldier was IDF officer Avraham Shapira. Captured during the early days of the war, Shapira spent the next three years as a prisoner of war in Egypt. In his book, "Three Years in an Egyptian Prison," Shapira gives a firsthand account of his experiences during that time.

Shapira's book is a powerful and moving testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Despite the horrors he endured, Shapira never gave up hope. He found strength in his faith and in the support of his fellow prisoners. And through it all, he never lost sight of his ultimate goal: to return home to his family.

Shapira's story is an important reminder of the cost of war. It is a story of suffering, loss, and hope. And it is a story that should never be forgotten.

Captured

I was captured on the second day of the war. My unit was ambushed by a group of Egyptian soldiers, and I was one of the few who managed to escape. I ran for hours, but I was eventually surrounded and forced to surrender.

I was taken to a prison camp in the Sinai Desert. The conditions there were harsh. We were kept in crowded, unsanitary cells and given little food or water. We were also subjected to regular beatings and torture.

Despite the hardships, I never gave up hope. I knew that I would eventually be released, and I was determined to survive until that day came.

Tortured

One of the worst experiences I endured in captivity was being tortured. The Egyptians would often beat me and subject me to electric shocks. They also threatened to kill me if I didn't give them information about the Israeli military.

I refused to give them any information, and eventually they gave up. But the torture had taken its toll on me. I was physically and emotionally broken.

Released

After three years in captivity, I was finally released. I was part of a prisoner exchange that was negotiated between Israel and Egypt.

I was overjoyed to be free, but I was also deeply traumatized by my experiences. It took me many years to recover from the physical and emotional scars of war.

Legacy

The Yom Kippur War was a turning point in my life. It taught me the importance of resilience, hope, and faith. I am grateful for the opportunity to have shared my story with others, and I hope that it will help to raise awareness of the horrors of war.

I am also grateful to the many people who helped me to recover from my experiences. My family, friends, and fellow veterans have all been instrumental in my healing process.

I am now a happily married man with two beautiful children. I am also a successful businessman. I am living proof that it is possible to overcome adversity and to live a full and happy life.
