War is a brutal and unforgiving experience, one that can test the limits of human endurance. For those who have served on the front lines, the memories of combat can be both haunting and inspiring. The following firsthand accounts from America's most decorated warriors in Iraq and Afghanistan provide a rare glimpse into the lives of those who have served their country with honor and distinction.

Jason Dunham was a 22-year-old Marine who served in Iraq in 2004. On April 14th of that year, Dunham's unit was ambushed by insurgents in the city of Fallujah. As the battle raged, Dunham noticed an insurgent armed with a grenade running towards his position. Without hesitation, Dunham threw himself on top of the grenade, absorbing the blast with his own body. His heroic act saved the lives of two of his fellow Marines, but it also cost him his own.

Dunham was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions. He is remembered as a true American hero, a man who gave his life to protect his comrades.
