Foreign Policy
Bush's foreign policy was largely shaped by the events of September 11th. In response to the attacks, he launched the War on Terror, which included the invasion of Afghanistan and the toppling of the Taliban regime. Bush also authorized the use of enhanced interrogation techniques against suspected terrorists, a practice that was later criticized as torture.
In 2003, Bush ordered the invasion of Iraq, arguing that the country possessed weapons of mass destruction and was a threat to the United States. However, no such weapons were ever found, and the war became increasingly unpopular as it dragged on. The U.S. eventually withdrew from Iraq in 2011.
Domestic Policy
Bush's domestic policy was also significant. He signed into law the No Child Left Behind Act, which aimed to improve education standards in the United States. He also created the Department of Homeland Security in response to the September 11th attacks. In 2008, Bush signed the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP),a $700 billion bailout of the financial industry.
Legacy
Bush's legacy is a complex one. He is credited with leading the country through the September 11th attacks and the subsequent War on Terror. However, he is also criticized for the Iraq War and the Great Recession. Bush left office with low approval ratings, but his reputation has improved in recent years.
George W. Bush was a consequential president who presided over a period of significant change in the United States. His legacy will continue to be debated for years to come.
