In this article, we share some of our encounters with these amazing animals and offer tips on how to stay safe when hiking in bear and bison country.
Grizzly Bears
Grizzly bears are one of the most powerful predators in North America. They can weigh up to 1,000 pounds and stand up to 8 feet tall on their hind legs. Grizzlies are typically brown or black in color, with a distinctive hump on their shoulders.
We were lucky enough to see a grizzly bear on our first day in Yellowstone. We were hiking along a trail when we came across a group of people gathered around something in the distance. We cautiously approached and saw a large grizzly bear grazing in a meadow.
The bear was unaware of our presence, so we were able to watch it for several minutes. It was an amazing sight to see such a powerful creature in its natural habitat.
Grizzly bears are generally shy and avoid contact with humans. However, they can be dangerous if they feel threatened. If you encounter a grizzly bear, the best thing to do is to remain calm and slowly back away. Do not run or make any sudden movements.
Bison
Bison are the largest land mammals in North America. They can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand up to 6 feet tall at the shoulder. Bison are typically brown in color, with a large hump on their shoulders.
We saw several bison during our time in Yellowstone. We saw them grazing in meadows, wallowing in mud baths, and even crossing the road in front of our car.
Bison are generally docile animals, but they can be dangerous if they feel threatened. If you encounter a bison, the best thing to do is to give it plenty of space. Do not approach bison, and never feed them.
Safety Tips for Hiking in Bear and Bison Country
Here are some tips on how to stay safe when hiking in bear and bison country:
- Make noise while hiking. This will help to alert bears and bison to your presence and give them time to move away.
- Stay on designated trails. Hiking off-trail can increase your chances of encountering a bear or bison.
- Carry bear spray. Bear spray is an effective deterrent against bears. Make sure to know how to use it properly before you go hiking.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to the sounds and smells around you. If you see or smell a bear or bison, leave the area immediately.
- If you encounter a bear or bison, remain calm and slowly back away. Do not run or make any sudden movements.
Encounters with grizzly bears and bison are a highlight of any visit to Yellowstone National Park. These amazing creatures are a reminder of the power and beauty of the natural world.
By following the safety tips outlined in this article, you can help to ensure that your encounter with these iconic animals is a positive one.
