Early Life and Career

Claude Rains was born William Claude Rains in London, England, on November 10, 1889. His father was a successful businessman, and his mother was a stage actress. Rains attended boarding school in England and Switzerland, and he studied law at the University of London. However, he soon decided to pursue a career in acting.

Rains made his stage debut in 1910, and he appeared in a number of plays in London and New York before making his film debut in 1914. He continued to work in both films and theater throughout the 1920s and 1930s, and he became known for his versatility and his ability to create memorable characters.

Hollywood Stardom

In 1933, Rains starred in The Invisible Man, which was a huge success. The film's success led to Rains being offered a contract with Universal Pictures, and he went on to star in a number of other horror films, including Dracula (1931) and The Wolf Man (1941).

In 1942, Rains starred in Casablanca, which is considered one of the greatest films ever made. Rains' performance as Captain Renault is one of the most iconic in film history. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his role, and he is often credited with helping to make the film a classic.

Later Career

After World War II, Rains continued to work in films. He appeared in a number of noirs, including Notorious (1946) and The Big Heat (1953). He also appeared in a number of comedies, including Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) and The Court Jester (1956).

Rains retired from acting in 1962, and he died in London, England, on May 30, 1967. He was 77 years old.

Claude Rains was one of the most versatile and talented actors of his time.
