Harry Crosby was a wealthy American expatriate who founded the Black Sun Press in Paris in 1929. The press published limited-edition books of poetry by Crosby and his wife, Caresse Crosby, as well as by other avant-garde writers. Crosby's work was often characterized by its dark and violent imagery, and he was a controversial figure in the literary world. In 1932, Crosby and his wife committed suicide together in a hotel room in New York City.

Crosby was born in Boston in 1898 to a wealthy family. He attended Harvard University, where he studied English literature. After graduating from Harvard, Crosby traveled to Europe, where he met and married Caresse Crosby. The couple settled in Paris in the 1920s, where they became involved in the avant-garde literary scene.

In 1929, Crosby founded the Black Sun Press. The press published limited-edition books of poetry by Crosby and his wife, as well as by other avant-garde writers such as Hart Crane, Ezra Pound, and William Carlos Williams.

Crosby's work was often characterized by its dark and violent imagery. He was fascinated by death and violence, and his poems often explored themes of love, loss, and despair. Crosby's work was controversial, and he was criticized by some for his pessimism and his glorification of violence.

In 1932, Crosby and his wife committed suicide together in a hotel room in New York City. Crosby was 34 years old. His death shocked the literary world, and his work was largely forgotten for many years.

In recent years, Crosby's work has been rediscovered by a new generation of readers. His poems have been praised for their originality, their intensity, and their dark beauty. Crosby is now considered one of the most important figures in the avant-garde literary movement.

The New York Review Classics edition of Crosby's work includes a selection of his poems, as well as an by the poet Robert Pinsky. Pinsky's provides a valuable overview of Crosby's life and work, and it helps to place Crosby in the context of the avant-garde literary movement.

The New York Review Classics edition of Crosby's work is a valuable addition to the library of any serious reader of poetry. Crosby's poems are challenging, but they are also rewarding. They offer a unique glimpse into the mind of a complex and troubled artist.
