Art Carney In A Publicity Still For The Honeymooners Art Carney: A Biography (Applause Books)

Early Life and Career

Art Carney was born Arthur William Matthew Carney on November 4, 1918, in Mount Vernon, New York. His parents were Irish immigrants, and he grew up in a working-class neighborhood. Carney began his career as a stand-up comedian in the late 1930s. He made his Broadway debut in 1942 in the play "The Star-Spangled Girl."

The Honeymooners

Carney's breakout role came in 1955 when he was cast as Ed Norton in the television series The Honeymooners. The show, which starred Jackie Gleason as Ralph Kramden, quickly became a hit with audiences. Carney's portrayal of the lovable but dim-witted Norton was a perfect complement to Gleason's bombastic Kramden. The Honeymooners ran for six seasons and is still considered one of the greatest sitcoms of all time.

The Art Carney Show

After The Honeymooners ended, Carney starred in his own variety show, The Art Carney Show. The show ran for three seasons and featured Carney performing sketches, singing songs, and interviewing guests. Carney also starred in several films during this time, including The Apartment (1960),for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Later Career and Death

Carney continued to act throughout the 1970s and 1980s, appearing in films such as Harry and Tonto (1974),The Great Santini (1979),and The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985). He also made guest appearances on television shows such as The Cosby Show and Cheers. Carney died of lung cancer on November 9, 2003, at the age of 85.

Legacy

Art Carney was one of the most beloved actors of his generation. He was known for his versatility, his comedic timing, and his ability to connect with audiences. Carney's work has left a lasting legacy on American popular culture. His performances in The Honeymooners and The Apartment are considered some of the greatest comedic performances of all time.
